The little dog never stops thanking the man who rescued him
Penny was happy to leave the shelter, like most dogs, and made sure that her rescuer knew how grateful she was to him.
On Monday, Leah Domingo was scheduled to visit the Augusta Animal Services shelter in Georgia on behalf of The Pixel Fund dog rescue organization to rescue a pit bull named Petey. But Deborah Kirkland, executive director of the Pixel Foundation in Georgia, asked Domingo if she would also agree to save Penny, a one-year-old corgi crossbreed.
«She [Kirkland] had heard that there was a dog named Penny with a damaged eye, and none of the local rescuers were interested in helping her,» Domingo said.
Domingo immediately agreed, and as soon as she arrived at the shelter, she went to meet Penny.
«When I saw her, my heart just broke because she was very scared and not very receptive,» Domingo said. «She was very nervous. On the first day, she didn’t even want to look at me. She just chickened out.»
To meet Didi Nistre, another volunteer who was supposed to help her, Domingo put both dogs in the car and made an hour and a half trip to Sparta, Georgia. However, Petey’s family had already contacted the shelter to pick up their dog, so she had to be returned, and the shelter called Domingo to ask her to come back.
Kirkland offered to send Petey and Penny to a shelter for just one night when Domingo contacted him. If Petey’s family hadn’t come, Domingo would have had to make only one trip to Sparta the next day, not two.
Domingo hated to leave Penny there, but she kept her promise.
I kissed her and whispered in her ear, «Don’t worry, Penny. You know we’ll be back. We will not let you down. I promise,» Domingo said.
Petey’s family came to pick her up, but Penny was still alone, so Domingo came back for her the next day. When Domingo approached her kennel, the little dog could not contain his excitement.
Domingo said, «She was a completely different dog. All she wanted to do was hug me. Even her tail was wagging.» «Oh, of course it’s me-you remember me,» I said.
When they were in Domingo’s car, Penny threw herself into his arms and tried to hug him.
She wrapped her little arms around me and wouldn’t let go. Domingo claimed that she finally realized that she was safe.
«I was crying,» Domingo added. «When a dog trusts you so much, it just gets into your heart.»
Penny didn’t want to stop hugging throughout the trip to Sparta.
«I had to drive with one hand because she was whimpering, as if to say, ‘Pat me, pat me,'» Domingo said.
When they arrived in Sparta, Domingo handed over the management of Penny Nystrom, and she was immediately taken to the vet. The little dog, in addition to the wounded eye, was found to have a heartworm.
Otherwise, Penny is doing well, and she could be adopted as soon as she gets stronger and recovers. Her name is Chloe Olivia now.
Domingo said: «It was really great. She got her freedom.»
