Holly Faulconer was fascinated by the tiny fawn’s courage when she first saw him trying to take seeds from her feeder.
However, very soon the fawn, which she named Sassafras, began to appear for a completely different reason. She wanted to see her new best friend, Falconer’s dog Huey.
Faulconer saved Huey nine years ago, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Huey cares a lot about his mother, so Faulconer was shocked when he started showing signs of wanting to get along with Sassafras, instead of seeing the curious deer as a danger.
According to Faulconer, Huey was initially wary and a little puzzled. «I’ve talked to both of them to make sure they’re safe. They just started talking slowly over the fence!

Now Sassafras often returns to exchange stories with his new girlfriend.

Sometimes Sassafras even takes his two little ones with him.
«It’s just amazing,» Faulconer said. «I love watching them.»
It doesn’t matter to Huey and Sassafras that they are different species. What’s really important is reliability, kindness, and the fact that they’re tall enough to chat over the fence.
