Scared puppy who survived shelter fire begs kind woman to take her home
Jacqueline Colette was thinking it would be difficult to choose between hundreds of pupps in dire need of a home. She had no idea that the perfect dog would actually choose her.
Volunteers with Austin Pets Alive! were horrified to see 7-month-old Donut, whom they named Cinnamon, reaching out through the bars of her cage. They informed Jacqueline that in all 11 days at the shelter, the timid dog had shown no affection.
Donutchick made it out of the shelter fire unharmed, but she caught parvo soon after, so the volunteers sent her to the parvo intensive care unit at Austin Pets Alive.
A week after Donut got to the new shelter, a sewer line burst and completely flooded the parvo unit. All the dogs in the shelter, including Donut, who had just finished treatment for parvo, were moved to open kennels.
The dogs in the parvo ward at @austinpetsalive need your help. The ward is flooded with sewage water and we are asking people to pick up parvo negative dogs before 6pm. Can you help? If so, please fill out this form: https://t.co/ULGEmy7ZaW and head over to APA!. Thank you! pic.twitter.com/IzF8SBawUf

«This little girl is 6 or 7 months old, and she’s been moved so many times,» Jacqueline said. «She’s never had a home, she’s never had her own bed, and she’s stuck in a kennel.»
So Jacqueline filled out her foster papers and hit the road with her new foster puppy, excited about the new chapter of their life together.
Donut was anxious as they drove home, and Jacqueline could feel it. She trembled, pulled her ears back and tucked her tail under her.
However, when a sudden thunderstorm forced Jacqueline to turn on the windshield wipers, the dog stopped shivering and spent the rest of the drive home circling his head around the windshield wipers.
On his first day home, Donut took a long bath to get rid of the stench of the sewer, and happily played in Jacqueline’s yard. Jacqueline noted that Donut became more loving and calm during the wash.
I was trying to calm her down when she snuggled up to me and put her head on my arm,» Jacqueline said. And she just said: «Thank you, lady,» looking at me.
As Donut was running around the new yard at first, her ears started to perk up, but they suddenly dropped when she realized she was being watched.
That night, Donutchick let it be known that she was not yet comfortable with the idea of sleeping in the house. «She was really, really trying to sleep on the lawn,» Jacqueline says. So Jacqueline grabbed a big blanket and lay with Donut in the yard for more than an hour.
Three days after Jacqueline brought Donut home, she made the decision to keep him with her forever.
Since Jacqueline took Donut home 2 months ago, the adorable dog has continued to open up even more.
«It’s amazing to see the gratitude in her eyes,» Jacqueline says. «You can tell she’s grateful and happy.»
