Pup born deaf and blind becomes an inspiration for kids with special needs
Usually our pets with disabilities look a bit different, but this doesn’t make them less important.
A tiny blind and deaf puppy was found in a bad condition. It seemed that the dog named Piglet had no chance for life, but the love of a caring woman saved him.

But this unique pink doggie managed to prove to everyone that every life, even the smallest one, is extremely important.
He is a mix of dachshund and chihuahua.
Piglet was born in Georgia, in a small house with 37 other dogs — due to mixing and irresponsible owners, the puppy was born completely deaf and blind. He was saved in 2017 being sent to a shelter

Piglet weighed only 1 pound (about 400 grams) and needed special care.
Thanks to animal rights activists, the puppy ended up in a shelter where Melissa, a veterinarian from Connecticut , found him more than two years ago. She decided to take him in so she could find him a home, but after a couple of months she couldn’t part with him anymore. But she already had 6 other dogs, and she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to take care of Piglet.

Piglet became one of the seven dogs in the Shapiro house. It took him a long time to get used to his new family — he was constantly whining and scared. Melissa couldn’t leave him alone for a month.
However, Piglet was able to overcome his fears — after a while he was already playing with other dogs.
Despite the difficulties, she knew Piglet was special: «I said he must have some greater meaning.»

Piglet became a star, and Shapiro started to bring him to classes and other groups. In his shows, the pup promotes a positive attitude toward life’s difficulties.
A teacher from Massachusetts found out about Piglet through Instagram — during one of her classes she told third-graders about the puppy. The teacher gave the dog as an example — how to cope with difficulties, accept your peculiarities and not give up after failures.

The kids were beyond excited when she and Piglet made a surprise visit to their classroom. «When we walked in with the pup in his stroller and my other 3 dogs, everyone was crying.»
Now Shapiro has created an online program that teaches children to overcome problems and work on themselves — Piglet has been featured in schools in Alabama, Connecticut, even in Japan and Australia.

Piglet inspires more than just overcoming problems — many of the page’s subscribers have decided to adopt a dog from a shelter because of him.
Shapiro also admits that she donates all the money from ads and merchandise dedicated to Piglet to shelters that care for dogs with special needs. To date, the deaf and blind puppy has been able to raise more than $30,000.
A social media page was created for the doggie. There people are told about the value of every life, about love and compassion. The pink dog has over 270,000 followers on instagram.

Piglet has become a big star that he has even inspired 2 published books: the memoir Piglet and the children’s book Piglet Comes Home, authored by Melissa Shapiro.
