Last year, Jacks Anderson and his wife stopped for lunch at the fried cicken stand when she noticed they had an audience.

A big black dog named Poppy was lying on the sidewalk under the stools at the counter, watching their meal.

She kept her eyes on them, but she didn’t come close. The stall owners got out and chased her away down the sidewalk. It was clear she was scared, and she disappeared.

After lunch, the dog was spotted again. This time they noticed her large pregnant belly — and realized they had to try to help her.

They picked her up the dog and put him in the car.

Poppy was thankful to finally be in a safe and comfortable place.

The couple took Poppy to the vet where the dog was treated for fleas and worms. Fortunately, Poppy turned out to be quite healthy, and she was returned to Anderson’s care.

Poppy spent the first days alone with them. «She slept most of the time and got comfortable on the couch pretty quickly. In the last day or two she became much more active, showing interest in other dogs and following me instead of sleeping.»

Poppy is fond of cuddles and affection, soaking up every bit of love she can get from her humans.

«Poppy is the kind of dog who loves to be loved,» Anderson says.

Anderson and her wife know that Poppy will be a great mother when the time comes.

She gets along great with the other dogs the couple has rescued and seems to make their family complete.

Poppy’s puppies will stay with Anderson and her wife until they are old enough to find loving homes. But Poppy will never have to worry about being on the streets again.

«Poppy will stay with us. We’re learning more and more about her all the time, and we have confidence in her,» Anderson says. «I don’t want to send her to someone else to put her through this again. She deserves an easier path.»
