Police officers help lost baby skunks reunite with their family

Skunks tend to have a bad reputation with people because they are mostly associated with the foul-smelling protective spray that many of us have taken on.

But they deserve our love and respect just like any other animal, and people should help them when they need it. Recently, two police officers did their best to reunite a family of skunks after their babies were separated.

Officer Caitlin Russell was on duty at the Cambridge Police Department in Massachusetts when she unexpectedly came across two little creatures who were lost.

While most people are understandably wary of skunks — not approaching them for fear of getting splattered — Officer Russell, who says she «loves animals,» took her chances and, thankfully, found that the baby skunks were friendly.

«They were very open to my presence and didn’t mind at all when I picked them up,» she said, adding that the skunk cubs were «such smelly cuties!»

Russell and her colleague looked after the skunk cubs, keeping an eye on their safety, and soon they were able to reunite them with their siblings.

Earlier in the day the animal commission found two other skunks, presumably from the same litter.

The skunks have been reunited and are now in the care of a wildlife rehabilitation center and will be released into the wild together when they are older.

They are in good care now, and their future is going to be just wonderful.

Rescuing skunks is not a typical part of police work, but these officers were kind enough to go the extra mile to help animals in need.
