Man helps tired out baby moose cross the road and reunite with Mom
Andrea was driving through on Sunday when traffic came to a halt.
A mother moose and her calf tried to cross the highway, but the exhausted calf struggled to climb over the fence. Separated from the cub, the moose cow became worried — and a cluster of cars appeared on a busy road.
She sat in the car for about 20 minutes watching the calf trying to find the end of the fence. “The calf came close to the end of the fence, but each time the mother brought him back to the center, further from the end,”. «I think the mother kept bringing him back to the center because it was a section where there were no cars.»
Joe Tate also got stuck in the car on his way home from fishing with friends. He, too, watched the drama unfold and decided to take action to reunite the family.
“After almost 30 minutes of frantic running back and forth with the lane getting bigger and bigger by the minute, a gentleman from the northern lane came over and gave the calf some help,” She said. “He waited for the right moment when his mother was on the other side of the highway. Traffic blocked her view as he quickly grabbed the calf and tossed it over the fence with its mother.»
Strained animals can be very dangerous to humans, especially when they are with their babies. If a mother feels threatened, she may attack, stomp, or kick to protect her cubs, so keeping a safe distance is best. While it is never a good idea to interfere with wildlife, this situation called for swift action.
Fortunately, they devised a plan to distract their mom by driving a trailer in front of her.
«I was very worried. I thought he was just hoping the mother would stay out of sight long enough to catch her baby.»
The animal was grateful for the help. The calf looked so tired that it almost fell into his arms.
Thanks to Tate, the calf returned to its mother, and the little family crossed the road to safety. “Things could have gone wrong and I understand and know that,”. «But things turned out for the best and it was worth the risk I took.»
