Little Chihuahua gave birth to a record number of puppies
At the end of March 2018, a heavily pregnant Chihuahua, whose nickname was Lol (lol), was brought to the Unleashed Pet Rescue & Adoption animal shelter in Kansas (USA). The dog was surrendered by her previous owner, who apparently accidentally allowed his pet to become pregnant and did not want to mess with puppies.
The Chihuahua was very young, she was only 18 months old, and judging by her severely bloated belly she was carrying a large number of puppies. According to observers, the dog looked «like a balloon.»
Volunteers were certain that Lol had at least eight puppies inside. The maximum reported number of puppies that Chihuahua dogs have ever given birth to was ten. Before the case of Lol.
Five days after being admitted to the shelter, Lol went into labor. The puppies were helped by volunteer Rebecca Taylor.
«We were told there would be about eight puppies,» says Rebecca, «I started taking them in. Seven, eight… nine, ten!»
Little Lol’s labor was prolonged and difficult; she gave birth all night and by morning there were as many as 11 puppies lying on the bed beside her! This was a shock to Rebecca and the other volunteers.
That said, all of Lol’s puppies turned out to be healthy and strong, which was also a miracle. The vet confirmed that the puppies were in excellent condition.
After the shock and euphoria of what happened, the volunteers contacted the Guinness Book of World Records and made a request to include Lol in the book as the Chihuahua who gave birth to the largest number of puppies in the world at once. They were told that they would review their entry within 12 weeks and make their decision.
Lol and her puppies will stay at the shelter for at least two months under the care of volunteers, and then they will look for permanent owners.
