A passerby found a kitten on the street and took it home. He didn’t know it wasn’t a cat at all
A Minnesota resident heard a kitten meowing somewhere near his car earlier this week. He started looking around and found the striped kitten clutched in a lump near the back tire.
The man turned out to be very kind, he realized that the kitten was in great danger on the street near the cars and decided to help the kitten. He picked it up and took it back to his home. He didn’t realize at the time that it wasn’t an ordinary cat at all and decided to keep the kitten.
«A little while later he did get suspicious that it wasn’t a cat, but some other animal,» says Tami Vogel, director of the Minnesota Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, «He started calling different organizations asking for help and advice and soon came across us, and then he came and gave us the kitten.»
For the center, it was this year’s first bobcat cub. Yes, it turned out to be a bobcat.
«We don’t know what happened there, but no one has seen a mother bobcat in the area. We only have an assumption that the mother was dragging her offspring, but something scared her off (maybe cars) and one kitten got lost. And then the mother could not or did not want to go back for it.
As a rule, in cases like this the staff of the center tries to return the kitten as quickly as possible to the place where it was found, since there is a high probability that its mother will be looking for it there.
«If you see a wild animal or its cub somewhere, if it does not look like it needs medical attention, do not approach it, do not touch it and do not try to feed it. Only if you find it the next day in the same place, then you need to contact organizations that help wild animals.
It turned out to be impossible to return the baby to its original location. He was found in an unsafe place with a lot of traffic. So the center made the decision to keep the baby and let it out, since it was healthy but dehydrated.
«She will spend a few days with us until his condition stabilizes. After that, we will turn him over to people who are rehabilitating bobcats. Eventually this little guy will be sure to return to the wild.»
