Baby elephant gets prosthetic leg after losing leg
Thailand is a popular tourist destination and the country is often associated with golden beaches, swaying palm trees and beautiful scenery.
But what many people don’t know is that the country also has a massive landmine problem along its borders with Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar. There are still about 360 km2 of mines and explosive remnants of war.

The authorities are doing their best to destroy all the mines, but it is a difficult job because the mined land includes villages, farmland and parts of the national forest.
Unfortunately, many of them still exist. Over the years, people and animals have received serious injuries.
One of them was the elephant Mosha.

When she was only 7 months old, she stepped on one of these mines and lost her leg.
Her position caused a huge strain on the spine as well as the other 3 limbs.
But when a doctor named Therdhai Jivacate heard about the terrible tragedy that Mosha had endured, he knew he had to act.

Dr. Therdhai Jivacate is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the rehabilitation of injured elephants. For a long time he worked in the world’s first elephant hospital, located in Thailand. When he heard about Moshi’s situation, he intervened without a second’s hesitation.

With the help of his team, Dr. Jivacate developed the world’s first artificial elephant leg. This prosthesis made life easier for Mosha and restored her ability to walk. As Mosha grew and aged, Dr. Jivacate made new prosthetics for her.
