Man takes his ill dog on one last hike by pushing him in wheelbarrow
With age, it becomes increasingly difficult for pets to move around. Old age and illness can make it difficult for elderly dogs to move.
But it’s also a time when you want to make your pet’s days special: knowing that they may not have much time left, you want to let them see the world and leave memories with them. And some owners find special ways to help their old dogs move around.
Carlos Fresco went everywhere with his 10-year-old labradoodle Monty. The dog accompanied him on countless hikes and walks. But after Monty was diagnosed with leukemia, he realized that the dog’s days were numbered.
«I knew Monty was dying when the cancer came back.»
«He was diagnosed 18 months ago, and he underwent chemotherapy very well. But unfortunately, eight weeks ago, the leukemia returned, and his condition deteriorated very quickly.»
But Carlos still wanted to have one big adventure with Monty, taking him to one of their favorite hiking spots: Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons in Wales.
But although Monty was no stranger to hiking, his declining health made it increasingly difficult to get around. Carlos was worried that his dog wouldn’t be able to get to the top.
So he improvised. He helped his friend up the hill… with a wheelbarrow!
Together they climbed the hill. The car attracted the attention of many other tourists. Carlos says that many «cried» and expressed sympathy after learning about Monty’s situation, and even offered to help push him up the hill.
This turned out to be the last journey of the dog. Monty died on June 21.
«He really was a special boy. God bless him.»
