Last month, a young street cat came under the window of the fire department in the bitter cold, hoping people would help her.

The man on duty at the Steinbach Fire Department in Steinbuch, Manitoba, Canada, was very surprised when he walked by and saw the little cat staring insistently through the window right at him.

«It was a cold evening and she was standing outside the window. When one of our firemen went outside, she ran right to him.»

The cat didn’t go anywhere and continued to sit under the window.

She didn’t look domestic and it was clear she had nowhere to go. The firefighters let the cat in because they were afraid she would freeze at night in the bitter cold.

In the warmth they could get a better look at the cat, she was dirty and very hungry. That said, the cat immediately responded to petting with a purr.

Station manager Calvin Tuohy, who already had four cats living at home, offered to temporarily take custody of the cat and take her home with him. He gave her the nickname Amber and took her to the vet the next day for a checkup. Aside from some mild frostbite on the tips of her ears, the vet found the cat to be quite healthy.

She was vaccinated and found she had ear mites, which they immediately started treating for.

During these exams, Amber didn’t fight back at all, but seemed to enjoy the human attention.

Some firefighters wanted to make Amber a station cat, but it turned out that the station had days off when there wasn’t even an attendant on duty and there would be no one to look after the cat during that time.

So they decided to find her a permanent owner. The cat was thoroughly bathed and then spayed 10 days later. Amber quickly recovered from the surgery and is now gaining weight well and starting to play with toys with her temporary family.

«We posted her photo and ads on Facebook and it looks like we’ve already found an owner for her,» Calvin said recently.
