Zoo celebrates birth of the most endangered wolf in the wolf, red wolf
The birth of an animal is always good news, especially if it is an imperiled species. Each new birth is a step towards preserving the species for a new generation.
Now one zoo is celebrating the long-awaited birth of the most endnagered wolf. As reported by a press release from Roger Williams Park Zoo, the 6-year-old red wolf, Brave, gave birth to a cub. It was the first birth of a red wolf at the zoo since 2005.
The red wolf is the most endangered spceies of canid. As said by the zoo, there are only 15 to 20 red wolves living in the wild, all in eastern North Carolina.
The zoo writes that this is a symbol of hope for the survival of this species. Thanks to conservation efforts, the population has imcreased to nearly 250 wolves.
The baby is now more than 20 days old and getting along well with its mother. Zoo staff is monitoring the cub and say the newborn seems to be gaining weight constantly.
The next few weeks will be vital for the cub’s development, and the baby and his mother will have to go into isolation: they will stay behind the scenes until the cub is ready to go outside the den.
But soon zoo visitors will have the opportunity to see one of the most endangered animal species — and let’s hope the llovely newborn will inspire them to care about red wolf conservation.
