Elephants who lost their parents to the ivory trade run to hug the angel who raised them
Forbidden poaching is a real threat to our dwindling wildlife population. Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick, a renowned wildlife activist, has devoted her life to caring for baby elephants orphaned by ruthless poachers who kill adult elephants for their tusks.
Daphne turned her attention to orphaned elephants in 1977. Initially, baby elephants found it very difficult to survive without their mothers. But over the years, Daphne’s tireless research has helped her create a special milk formula that helps elephants get the adequate nutrition they need to thrive.
Daphne is the mother figure for all the elephants she raises. Elephants have a strong sense of family, which is why they always run to hug their foster mother when they see her. Later in her life, Daphne noticed that a huge number of rhinos were being killed for their horns. So she expanded her crusade against the rhinos as well.
All animals raised by Daphne return to their natural habitat when they are old enough. Unfortunately, the ivory tusk trade and another illegal animal smuggling still thrive due to their popularity on the black market, which continues to put these animals at risk. Let’s raise our voices and help put an end to this monstrous trade.
